wedding road trip

14,000 miles, 200 friends, two lives, one big decision

And Now… a Feel Good Moment

About a month ago, my cousin Allison pointed out that most of what I write on Wedding Road Trip is sarcastic. I prefer to see it as “poking fun” or “finding the humor in everything,” but she’s probably right. She encouraged me to write something positive once in awhile, so here I am, trying to think of something bright and cheery to say.

9:00 am: Received a tweet about adding something sentimental to one’s wedding bouquet. You know, like a picture of your dead grandmother or something*. I immediately think… “hmm… what would happen if someone took this idea too far and included Grandpa’s old handgun in the center of a dozen tulips?” FAIL.

*Note… I actually think this idea is quite cool. I am very lucky to have both of my grandmothers still, something I definitely don’t take for granted. They’ll be in the front row when Chris and I get married.

10:00 am: Find a book about how to be a good wife, circa 1956. Stare at it for ten minutes, willing it to be something I can write about from a positive angle.

11:00 am: Still waiting.

12:00pm: And waiting. As I wait, a direct message shows up in my Twitter inbox. I hate all automatic direct messages, but this one was particularly droll. Thanks for the follow. I just got married! I Love my husband sooo much.” I sure as hell hope so- you just pledged your life to the guy.

And then it happened. I mistakenly clicked on the wrong link and ended up at Doodle for Google. As I looked at the drawings and read the positive statements submitted by children and teenagers almost half my age, I felt my hard heart soften just a bit.

Sameek writes, “I wish religious harmony for the world. We all are equal under one God! Our world will be a better place, if we love and respect each other irrespective of our religion.”

Austin writes, “What I wish for the world is to develop ways of producing pollution-free energy. Harnessing the wind on wind farms would be a clean energy source. Building wind towers on a wind farm is a good way to produce electricity. It produces no waste and needs no fuel.”

i wish (meaghan parker, age 17)

Meaghan writes, “I wish for more hope, hope for the future. I wish there was more love. Love for the environment and people. I wish for more joy. I wish for peace, a movement for it. I wish for more trees. I wish for gay rights, now.”

I echo their sentiments completely.

And thanks for the feedback, Allison. I’ll keep trying ;)

Sometimes I hate the corporate monstrosity that is Google. Then I see stuff like this and I change my mind…
