14,000 miles, 200 friends, two lives, one big decision

Day 49: Hell Hath Frozen Over

wedding road trip hoover damRoxy is solely responsible for eliminating my Fat Car Ass. She drives me to the gym when I don’t feel like getting up in the morning and encourages me to go to the mountains for long afternoon hikes. While we have several days left of interviews and meet-ups, Roxy has promised me that she’ll take me to exercise every day, no matter where we are.

This morning, as she drove Chris and me to Crunch, she even complimented me on my slightly-more-toned physique. We then shared a b0nding moment as Lady Gaga played over the radio. When the song finished, Chris uttered a sentence that stopped me cold:

“I could live outside of the City now, I mean, if you want to. I don’t think I mind driving anymore.”

I’m sorry, what? This from the guy who swore he’d never live outside of the City, would never drive a car more than once a month, and would never consider living somewhere like Napa or Sonoma and commute in a few days a week.

If he tells me that he’ll also live in a gated community (the equivalent of death to all urban planners), I will fully believe that Ford has been serving him the good punch behind my back.

    Awesome!

  2. This has been a bit exaggerated and I’m being misquoted. I still want to live in a city and have zero interest in driving to work. Walk, bike, or train is my preference. And I want to walk out the door and have cafes and shops a short walk away. So yes, now I could live in Tiburon and take the ferry to work. But the idea of having a house with a yard still makes me ill (not judging others, it’s just not for me).

Rather, I now would like car to supplement that city life. I don’t mind driving anymore and it would be great to get out of town and run errands with it. But I don’t want a car to hide behind. Life (and WRT) is about people.

  3. My, My, an elitist urban planner.:) As someone with a house, a yard, and a car I apparently “hide behind,” I prefer to live a little closer to nature and a few people I care about.

  4. Oooh! The drama! Chris, you did say that- but you know, go ahead and retract if it makes ya feel better. By the way- I never said you wanted to drive to work- I just suggested that you’re rethinking cars, thanks to Roxy. You inferred the rest.

  5. Round One of the Elite-Off between a university professor who lives in a gated community vs. an urban planner who commutes via transit…who will win?
