wedding road trip

14,000 miles, 200 friends, two lives, one big decision

Roger. 20. Jaime here, live from the road. We’re somewhere in between Baton Rouge and Damn These People Are Huge, Louisiana. In case you’re keeping track, you now know that it’s late in the day and we’re NOT EVEN HALFWAY to Tampa. I’d be fine with this fact, if Chris would just stop reminding me of the dream he had two nights ago. The dream that had us making an epic drive to Florida, resulting in paralysis for him and jail time for me. Puppies and kittens. Puppies and kittens are all I ask.

You might be wondering how we keep each other entertained on these long, tedious drives. While I’d like to say that we make use of the dozens of CDs and podcasts that our friends gave to us at the Kickoff Party, I’d be a big fat liar.  I’d love to admit that we’re working our way through the bag o’games that our friend Renee gave us to keep our idle hands occupied. Not so much. Nope. Instead, we have conversations that go something like this:

Me: Hmm… what if we bail on this 17-hour drive, move Adrienne to dinner, and go to New Orleans to party tonight?
Chris: (smoke visibly starting to fly out of his ears) WE’VE ALREADY LOCKED THE ITINERARY!
Me: (feigning innocence) I’m just making a suggestion.
Chris: Look, if we drive to New Orleans it will take us twenty hours to get to Tampa tomorrow morning.
Me: But that’s not possible! The whole drive from Austin to Tampa is supposed to take 17 hours total. That doesn’t add up. Look it up on your iPhone.
Chris: (grumbles, sighs, hems, haws) Fine. It’s ten hours from New Orleans to Tampa. That’s still a really long drive.
Me: What if we go to Mobile instead?
Chris: What in the hell is in Mobile?
Me: I don’t know, could be cool.
(Chris reaches for his iPhone)
Me: What are you doing?
Chris: I’m typing “is Mobile fun?”
Me: What happened?
Chris: My phone laughed at me.

We spent over two hours debating the relative merits of detouring to New Orleans and then, after passing the exit, spent the next hour questioning our decision to press forward.

Welcome to our world.

(P.S. We do listen to the CDs, so thank you to everyone who spent the time making us a disc. To the rest of you: you are dead to us.)

Live from the lady married 9 years. I am laughing at this because its really an allegory for all that happens in marriage. When one wants to push through its likely the other one doesn’t. In our house when I want to “slough off” I always try to make the alternate choice sound like more fun and an easy distraction. Thus, similar to Jamie’s New Orlean’s party and Chris’ determination to keep on.

Marriage is and can be about so many things. But its all been boiled down for me into the joint decision to do something, do it and stay together while doing it. As long as one of us has out head in the right place at the right time we can’t go wrong.

I’m living through this Wedding Road Trip vicariously. An awesome idea and a reminder to those of us who are already married that our whole role is to be by each others side. It can’t always be perfect but we learn along the way, have our “car” trouble, fix it and drive on together.

    Be nice and be safe!

  5. I want to know your favorite road trip tracks so far!

  6. Should have warned you about Louisiana. Sorry. Apparently all I am good for is champagne, nice dinners, blog fodder, and oh yeah - one horny dog.

    Another “dead” friend… Out.

was there a rule that said you had to play each CD at least once in its entirety, no cheating? Let’s bump that to 3 times for mine, I guarantee it will grow on you.
